2. James² Maxwell (John¹)⁽¹⁾ was born bef 1747. James died ca Dec 1800: in Adams Co, Pa, at approximately 53 years of age.

He married Mary. Mary was born ca 1745 in Arnaugh, Ireland. (Additional notes for Mary⁽²⁾) According to Fay Maxwell, she was a sister to Thomas Campbell, the father of Alexander Campbell who founded the Campbell regligious sect. (per Fay Maxwell, Maxwell Genealogy) Other researchers have demonstrated that this connection to the Campbells is unlikely.

The 1783 taxables of York Co, Penna., included James Maxwell in Tyrone Twp. with 100 acres, 2 horses, etc., and 6 inhabitants.

.. In the Adams County Orphans Court dockets (A-6) by date 6 Jan 1801, petition sets forth that James Maxwell of Tyrone Township intestate left issue John, Robert, Isabella wife of Archibald Boyd, Margaret wife of Abner Hutton, Mary wife of John NcNeil, Jane. ⁽³⁾

James Maxwell and Mary had the following children:

+ 5 i. John³ Maxwell was born 1767.

+ 6 ii. Robert Maxwell was born July 1769.

7 iii. Margaret Maxwell. She was married to Abner Hutton.

8 iv. Izabel Maxwell was born ca 1771. Izabel died 14 July 1837: at 66 years of age. Her body was interred Lower Marsh Creek cem. She was married bef 1805 to Archibald Boyd. Archibald was the son of William Boyd and Catherine McGrew. His body was interred Lower Marsh Creek cem. She was mentioned in her grandfather John Maxwell's will dated 25 July 1785.

9 v. Mary Maxwell. She was married to John McNeil.

10 vi. Jane Maxwell.
