He married Ruth Siford bef 1795. Ruth was born 1774 in Penna.. (Additional notes for Ruth Siford⁽⁸⁾) .. John served as a Quartermaster in the Revolution.⁽⁹⁾

He is mentioned in the will of his grandfather John Maxwell as John, eldest son of James in July 1784.

John Maxwell and Ruth Siford had the following children:

+ 25 i. Samuel S.⁴ Maxwell was born 16 Jul 1795.

26 ii. Mary Maxwell was born in York Co, Pa 7 Mar 1799. Mary died Apr 1887: in Iowa, at 88 years of age. She was married to John Talbert. They moved to Brooklyn, Iowa.

27 iii. Jane Maxwell was born in Adams Co, Pa 6 Jul 1801. She was married to Mr. Hoagland.

28 iv. Margaret Maxwell was born in Brooke Co, (W)Va 15 Feb 1804. Margaret died : in Holmes Co, Oh. She was married to William Tainsburg.

29 v. Robert Maxwell was born in Jefferson Co, Oh 17 Sept 1806. He married Mary Tinkey?. Robert was connected with the University of Wooster. Lived Millersburg, Ohio

30 vi. Isabell Maxwell was born in Jefferson Co, Oh 1 Dec 1809. She was married to John or James Shimer.

31 vii. John Maxwell was born in Tuscarawas Co, Oh 9 Jan 1811. He married Martha Dalbey.

32 viii. Bezaleel Maxwell was born in Tuscarawas Co, Oh 11 Jul 1813. He married Anna Wise.

33 ix. Abner Maxwell was born in Tuscarawas Co, Oh 27 Nov 1815. He married Matilda Boyd. She came to America in 1828

34 x. Archibald Stephen Maxwell, MD was born in Tuscarawas Co, Oh 22 Jan 1822. He married Charlotte Hoff. A.S. Maxwell of Holmes County, Ohio gives a release in right of his wife Charlotte, granddaughter of the late Jonathan Hough of York County [3U, 119, July 9, 1847]⁽¹⁰⁾

35 xi. David Cypher Maxwell, MD was born in Tuscarawas Co, Oh 8 Oct 1822. He married Tena Mayers.
