4. John2 Maxwell (John1) was born bef 1759.
He married Isabella Dodds in Cumberland Co, PA, (lic) Mar-Oct 1779. Isabella(5) was the daughter of John Dodds and Mary McGrew. .. Three children of John were named in Isobel Maxwell's will dated August 31, 1794. .. John Maxwell junior, yeoman, member of the Fifth Class of the Inhabitants of Tyrone Township, classified under an Act of Assembly passed in 1780, entitled "An Act to Compleat the Quota of the Federal Army;" each class was "required to provide, in fifteen days from this date [January 30, 1781], one able-bodied Recruit for the continental Army, to serve during the War," under penalty of a fine of L15.0.0 specie: this class proved delinquent [Class Lists, MSS,. The Historical Society of York County; H.,J. Young, York County, Pennsylvania in the American revolution: a Source Book, MS., 184, 186] .. In October, 1782 he was indicted for misdemeanor in that he helped three British prisoners of war to escape through York County; he pleaded not guilty, but in April, 1784 his recognizance was forfeited absolutely. [The original indictment, No. 3 Oct. Sessions 1782, with endorsements, is among Revolutionary Papers in the Historical Society of York County; Young, op.cit., 331(6) ]
