28. Samuel³ Busey (Charles², Paul¹, Elizabeth^A -?-) was born ca 1708.

Samuel Busey appears on an early tax list of unknown date and on the 1761 tax list in Rowan County, NC.⁽⁶⁸⁾

He was one of 30 signers of a petition to the North Carolina legislature in 1768, protesting oppressive laws. He served on juries there in 1771 and 1772. He may be the Samuel Busey who appears in the 1790 Federal census of Rowan Co, NC.⁽⁶⁹⁾

Samuel Busey had the following children:

+ 56 i. Mathew⁴ Busey was born 7 or 9 Apr 1742.

57 ii. Charles Busey was born bef 1745. He married an unknown person (lic) 28 Mar 1765: in Rowan Co, NC.

Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Stokes Co, NC. Potential descendants of the Stokes Co, NC, Charles include Prudence Busey who married Thomas Stuart in 1794, and Sally Busey who married Isaac Stokes in 1804.

58 iii. Sarah Busey was born ca 1745. She married David Hall (lic) 20 Feb 1765: in Rowan Co, NC. The bondsman to the license was Samuel Busey.

59 iv. John Busey was born bef 1747. On the Rowan County, NC, tax list in 1768.⁽⁷⁰⁾

There was a John Bues in the 1790 census in Salisbury Dist. of Rowan County with a family of 5 and 8 slaves. In 1800, John Buise Sr. was in Rowan Co, NC, aged over 45 with 9 slaves. 1810 finds John Buis Sr. and John Jr. in Rowan Co. Possible descendants: in 1813, a Samuel Buce married Catherine Howard, and in 1825 a Joseph Smith married Tempe Busey, both in Rowan Co.

It remains to be determined if these Johns are all the same man and if he is related. There was a William Buis in Rowan Co, NC, as early as 1759 who died in 1763 and had sons John and Thomas. He lived near William Baldwin. Buis is indeed a Scottish surname, so this may very well be an entirely different family.
